Rev. Elander Lewis III was born and raised in Albany, New York, where he was baptized and active in youth ministry at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he met his wife, Nicole. They have four children: Jahmel, Jewel, Myles, and Trey. Their marriage, founded on their faith in God, has flourished since 1996. The family lives by the mantra that love never fails and believes in serving something greater than themselves. They have been living in Warrenton, Virginia, since 2021.
Since 1999, Rev. Lewis has been an integral part of the ministry at both Heritage Fellowship Church in Reston, VA, and First Baptist Church of Sterling. He has contributed significantly to the youth, security, and men's ministries at both churches. In 2017, he answered his calling to preach God's word and was subsequently ordained and licensed to preach the Gospel in 2021 at First Baptist Church. At First Baptist Church, he served as the instructor for New Members classes, taught Bible study, actively participated in the prayer ministry, and led the call to worship.
Rev. Lewis and the First Lady have consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to community service through their involvement in sports programs. These initiatives utilize sports as a medium to impart essential life skills, including work ethic, teamwork, accountability, integrity, perseverance, and commitment. Their efforts have played a significant role in enabling numerous young individuals to pursue higher education by attending college.
In the year of 1868, on a cold winter day, God’s children sought a place to worship. With no building to call their own, the first services were held under the trees, known as the Bush Arbors. Desiring a more covered and spacious area, the congregation began to gather in a cow
barn on the property of Mr. Gus Williams. This humble beginning marked the foundation of what is now known as Providence Baptist Church, the little white church on the side of the road. The founders, Deacon John Richard (Jack) Davis, Gus Williams, and Jim White, laid the groundwork for a spiritual sanctuary that has stood the test of time.
Providence Baptist Church has been blessed with the guidance and spiritual leadership of many distinguished men of God over the years. The journey began with Rev. Goffney of Culpeper or Madison County, who was the church’s first pastor. Following him was Rev. John Ford, also
from Culpeper.
The legacy continued with Rev. John Duval, and then Rev. Kato Roy, who not only served at Providence Baptist Church but also led the congregation at Silver Hill Baptist Church in Morrisville, Virginia. Later, Rev. Roy was called to pastor a church in Washington D.C.
After Rev. Roy’s departure, Rev. Edgar Newton took on the pastoral role, offering services on the third Sunday of each month at Providence and the first Sunday of each month at St. James Baptist Church in Bealeton, Virginia.
Rev. Newton was succeeded by Rev. Houston Brooks of Alexandria, Virginia, who later moved on to become a pastor in Rockville, Maryland. The succession of dedicated pastors included Rev. Elmer Tyler, Rev. Wendall Grant, Rev. Tom Adams, Rev. Warren Williams, Rev. Leonard Frazier, Rev. James Jackson, Rev. Earl W. McKenzie Jr., Rev. Floyd Haralson, and Rev. Nathaniel Harpe.
In January 2025, Rev. Elander Lewis began his journey as the current pastor of Providence Baptist Church, continuing the rich heritage of spiritual leadership and dedication to the church community.
